The risk of tooth loss can increase with age. You have more options than ever before to replace lost teeth, but dental implants offer exceptional benefits not possible with other solutions. A dental implant is the only treatment to replicate both the tooth root and the crown, no matter your age. You’re never too old to invest in the benefits of dental implants, but there are a few things you should know.

Dental Implants and Older Adults

A dental implant is unique because it mimics the entire tooth structure from the root up. A titanium implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as a new root. An abutment is placed on the implant to connect a customized restoration. Most people with good oral and general health are candidates for dental implants. Certain medical conditions and medications can coincide with aging that may affect the success of the procedure. Therefore, it’s not unusual for older adults to require a little prep work before getting dental implants.

Possible Preliminary Procedures

Your dentist will learn more about your health history and any medications you’re taking during your consultation. They will also review a CT scan of your oral structures to look for anything concerning, like bone loss or infections. Based on the results of your examination, you might require a few preliminary procedures, which may include:

  • Tooth Extractions: Dentists strive to preserve every natural tooth, but extractions can be best in some situations, such as cases of severe decay or to make room for implant dentures.
  • Gum Disease Therapy: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 50% of adults have a form of gum disease. Your gums must be healthy before getting dental implants.
  • Bone Grafting: Losing a single tooth can cause your jawbone to shrink by up to 25% within the first year, which will continue to deteriorate overtime. It’s not uncommon to require bone grafting to enhance the strength of your jawbone to ensure there is sufficient density to support dental implants.
  • Sinus Lift: Bone loss can cause dental implants to protrude into the maxillary sinus cavities when replacing upper back teeth. A sinus lift can be used along with bone grafting to ensure there is enough room to adequately place your implant posts.

Success Rate of Dental Implants

Although your treatment plan may require a few additional steps than with younger adults, dental implants offer over a 95% success rate. Your new teeth can last for 30 years or more with the correct care, like brushing and flossing. Don’t let age stand in the way of enjoying the next best thing to your real teeth.
